Five Areas to Declutter Before Selling Your Home

Cleaning and staging your property is crucial for attracting buyers and securing the best  price on your sale. The visual aesthetic of a home can persuade buyers and  dramatically increase the bids on your home! Still, many homeowners have  accumulated a plethora of items, which makes preparing for viewings a challenge.  Selling your home is a great time to declutter and ensure your home is in tip top shape  for viewings.

Here are five crucial areas to get you started:

Kitchen drawers and cabinets

Everyone has that junk drawer, but it can still be a surprising eye-sore for prospective  buyers! Buyers frequently open drawers and cabinets to assess storage space and  functionality. It’s time to clear out the clutter, including: mismatched Tupperware,  restaurant menus, and unused kitchen gadgets. Organize your pots, pans, and utensils  neatly. Consider investing in drawer dividers and shelf organizers to maximize storage  efficiency. A decluttered and organized kitchen sends a powerful message about the  overall care and maintenance of your home.

Under the Bathroom Sink

The area under the bathroom sink is notorious for accumulating cleaning supplies, old  toiletries, and miscellaneous items. Buyers will likely open these cabinets during home  tours, so it's crucial to declutter and organize this space. Dispose of empty or expired  products and consider keeping only essential items neatly arranged. Use bins or  baskets to corral smaller items like toiletries and cleaning supplies. A well-organized  bathroom cabinet can convey a sense of cleanliness and attention to detail that buyers  will appreciate.

Utility and Laundry Rooms

The utility and laundry rooms are often used as catch-all spaces for cleaning supplies,  tools, and unused items. Declutter these areas to create an impression of efficiency  and functionality. Store cleaning supplies in a designated area and consider wall mounted storage solutions for tools and equipment. Clear any items off the washer and  dryer to showcase the available workspace.

Closet Shelves and Overhead Storage

Closets are a natural focus for decluttering, but homeowners frequently overlook the  shelves and overhead storage areas. Potential buyers will open closet doors and look  up to assess available storage space. Clear out cluttered shelves and donate or pack  away items you won't need during the selling process. Ensure that overhead storage is  tidy and well-organized. Neatly stacked boxes or bins suggest ample storage capacity  and make closets appear more spacious.

Garage Storage

The garage is often treated as a dumping ground for miscellaneous items, making it an  area in desperate need of decluttering. Go through the contents of your garage and  separate items into categories: keep, donate, toss, or store elsewhere. Dispose of  broken or unused items and consider selling or donating items in good condition. Use  storage shelves or wall-mounted racks to organize tools, sports equipment, and  seasonal items.

Decluttering is a crucial step in preparing your home for sale, and while it's common to  focus on the more visible areas like living rooms and bedrooms, don't underestimate the  impact of decluttering these surprising and often overlooked spaces. As an added  bonus, it makes packing for your move that much smoother!
